Monthly Unique Visitors Analysis
- ChatGPT has seen tremendous growth in monthly unique visitors, going from 186.3 million in March 2023 to 212 million in May 2023. This represents over 14% month-over-month growth.
Starting from May, ChatGPT's visitor numbers have been slowly and gradually decreasing.
The following could all be reasons for its decline in visitors:
- Competition among AI chatbots is becoming increasingly fierce, and Google Bard, Claude, and Poe have taken some of ChatGPT's market share.
- ChatGPT launched an iOS app version in May and an Android app in July. Many web users have switched to using the app versions instead. However, SimilarWeb's statistics are mainly for the web version.
- Early curious users who wanted to try ChatGPT have lost interest.
- Google Bard started with 15.04 million unique visitors in March 2023 when it was first launched in a limited beta. It grew rapidly to 42.66 million by July 2023. However, it dropped to 30.19 million in June 2023.
- Claude has seen steady but slower growth, going from 554,343 unique visitors in March 2023 to 1.55 million by May 2023. However, Claude's user base is still dwarfed by ChatGPT and Google Bard.
Geographic Distribution Analysis
- ChatGPT's top 5 countries are relatively well distributed, with the US accounting for 9.68% of users. Other top countries include India, Japan, Indonesia, and Brazil.
- Google Bard sees more concentration in the US and India, which account for 25.4% and 16.92% of users, respectively. The UK, Japan, and Indonesia round out its top 5.
- The US is Claude's largest market with 32% of users. The UK follows at 9%. China, Peru and India each comprise 5-8% of users.
China is not on Claude's list of supported countries. However, according to data from Similarweb, 8% of users are from China. These Chinese users are likely circumventing geographic restrictions by using VPN services to access Claude.
In summary, ChatGPT and Google Bard see strong growth globally, while Claude's growth is slower. ChatGPT has the most balanced global distribution among the three.
